Kelsey Kuan on Growth, Storytelling, and Finding Her Voice Through Music
By. Alicia Zamora
In an exclusive interview with Alicia’s Studio, singer-songwriter Kelsey Kuan reflects on her evolving musical journey—from childhood piano lessons and choir performances to becoming an emerging artist carving out her own space in today’s music landscape.
What stands out most in Kelsey’s story is how naturally music has always been part of her life. Even before she considered it a career path, it existed as something familiar—something she grew into rather than something she forced.
“I started out doing music when I was little… and then I started writing songs, and that’s where my music career started.”
That early foundation eventually turned into something more intentional during high school and college, where she began to recognize songwriting not just as a hobby, but as a possible future.
Kelsey’s songwriting process is rooted in storytelling—often beginning with simple guitar ideas before expanding into full emotional narratives. Depending on the context, her process shifts between solitude and collaboration, but always returns to personal expression.
“If I’m working on my own songs, I’ll usually write on my guitar and then create a melody and lyrics.”
That balance between instinct and structure defines much of her creative identity. Even when experimenting with new sounds or working with producers, she describes her writing as the constant thread that holds everything together.
Influences, Nostalgia, and Early Inspiration
A major part of Kelsey’s artistic foundation comes from early exposure to Disney Channel-era pop music—a world that shaped her understanding of melody, storytelling, and emotional clarity in songwriting.
“My first influences were Disney Channel and Nickelodeon… I was really inspired by pop music from that era.”
Artists like Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus, and soundtracks like Lemonade Mouth played a surprising role in shaping her early creative instincts, blending nostalgia with a strong sense of melodic storytelling.
Like many artists, Kelsey has faced creative blocks—but instead of forcing inspiration, she has learned to step away and reset.
“If I hit a creative block, I usually just take a break and let my mind rest… usually within a week or so, something comes back.”
For her, creativity is not a constant stream but a cycle—one that requires distance, patience, and lived experience to restart naturally.
Even during longer periods of stagnation, she sees those moments as part of the process rather than failure.
While Kelsey primarily writes from her own perspective, she also draws inspiration from films, conversations, and the lives of people around her when she feels creatively blocked. This allows her music to shift between deeply personal and universally relatable.
That openness to outside influence helps her maintain emotional variety in her work while still staying grounded in her own voice.
“I like to write from my own perspective, but when I have a creative block, I get inspired by movies or talking to friends.”
As her audience continues to grow, Kelsey finds the most meaningful part of her journey isn’t streaming numbers or milestones—it’s connection.
“The most rewarding part is when listeners message me saying my song inspired them or comforted them in some way.”
For her, music is less about performance and more about communication—an exchange between artist and listener that creates a sense of shared understanding.
Kelsey has begun expanding her sound through collaborations, including working with Korean producer Dept. and exploring more layered, production-driven music compared to her earlier acoustic style.
Her evolution reflects a natural transition from simplicity to complexity—not abandoning her roots, but building on them.
What once was just voice and guitar has grown into something more textured, collaborative, and sonically diverse.
With her debut EP on the way, Kelsey is entering a new chapter in her career. The project represents both growth and transition, featuring songs that mark where she is now as an artist.
“I have an upcoming EP coming out soon… it’s going to be my first debut EP!”
Beyond releases, she hopes to continue writing for both herself and other artists, perform more live shows, and expand her presence in the music industry while staying true to her storytelling-driven identity.
As an introverted artist, one of Kelsey’s biggest challenges has been stepping outside her comfort zone and meeting new people within the industry. But she sees this discomfort as part of growth rather than a barrier.
At the core of everything, she returns to one principle: authenticity.
“It’s important to adapt with the industry, but I like to stay true to myself and remember why I started music.”
Kelsey Kuan’s journey is still unfolding, but what defines her most is consistency in intention. Whether she’s writing alone with a guitar or collaborating with producers across different genres, her focus remains the same: honest storytelling that connects.
Her music exists in a space between nostalgia and growth—soft yet intentional, personal yet relatable. And as she steps into her debut EP era, she continues building a sound that reflects exactly that balance.
A voice still evolving, but already deeply grounded in sincerity.
