Finding Happiness in the Ordinary: How moocean Learned to Tell His Own Story
Some artists spend years searching for the sound that feels like home. For moocean, that journey wasn’t about finding the perfect melody—it was about finding the courage to finally tell his own story.
There’s something comforting about the way moocean talks about happiness. Not as a huge, life-changing moment, but as something much smaller — a walk with his wife and dog, a quiet morning at home, or a feeling he doesn’t want to let pass by unnoticed. After years of creating music behind the scenes as a producer and songwriter, moocean is finally sharing those personal moments through his album Happiness.
Before releasing his own music this year, moocean spent years behind the scenes producing and writing for other artists. While he loved creating music, something always felt missing. “After working as a producer for a long time, I started to feel like the music I was making wasn’t really mine,” he tells me. “Since I wasn’t really putting my own stories into the music, I didn’t feel like I was truly expressing myself.”
That realization eventually pushed him toward a challenge he had spent years avoiding.
“While I was working as a producer, there was always a part of me that wanted to make my own music,” he says. “But I think I held myself back with thoughts like, ‘I can’t sing,’ or ‘I’m a producer, so I should just focus on producing.’” Those doubts lingered for years before he finally decided to ignore them. “It took me a long time, but I finally challenged those thoughts that had been holding me back and decided to do it. Just the fact that I challenged myself and finished these songs means a lot to me.”
That honesty runs through every song on Happiness. Rather than chasing dramatic stories or larger-than-life moments, moocean writes about the parts of life many people overlook.
“I’m actually a very ordinary person,” he says. “I find a lot of joy in small things every day. I love spending time with my family, and even something as simple as taking a walk with my wife and my dog can bring me a lot of happiness.”
As our conversation continued, it became obvious that Happiness isn’t just the title of the album—it’s the philosophy that shaped it. Long before he wrote a single song, he already knew what he wanted to call the project.
“I actually decided on the album title before I even started making the album,” he explains. “I think happiness is the most important thing in life.”
For moocean, happiness isn’t something waiting at the finish line after success. It’s something that quietly exists in everyday life—if you’re willing to notice it.
“I think you can find happiness almost anywhere if you make an effort to look for it,” he says. “I want to become someone who can really notice and appreciate those small moments.”
Perhaps that’s why he turns those moments into songs in the first place.
“It’s not easy for me either to not overlook those little moments,” he admits. “I think that’s actually one of the reasons I wanted to turn them into music—so I could remember them instead of letting them pass me by.”
One of the sweetest examples of what happiness looks like for moocean comes from a small moment he experiences every morning with his wife and dog.
“There’s actually a little moment of happiness I experience every morning,” he shares. “My dog likes to sleep on top of my wife’s head, right above her pillow. So when I wake up in the morning, my wife and my dog are always sleeping there next to each other, facing me with their eyes closed.”
It’s a moment he’s come to cherish so much that he gave it its own name. “I call it our ‘breathing choir,’” he says. “I love that little moment when they’re lying there with their heads together, making this quiet breathing choir. Sometimes I wake up a little earlier just so I can quietly enjoy that moment.”
For moocean, happiness isn’t always found in big milestones or major accomplishments. Sometimes, it’s found in the quiet moments that happen before the day even begins.
